Hello World,

We had an AWESOME holiday weekend! How was yours?

Saturday we awoke bright and early and set off for the Northern Cascades to hike to the Hidden Lake Fire Lookout! This hike was hands down the best hike we have done in the state of Washington to date! Its 9 miles and 3000 vertical feet of forest, beautiful wildflowers, streams, and spectacular views! Although no longer in use, fire lookouts were used throughout the Cascades to detect wild fires. Now, these lookouts are often used for lodging by backpackers and hikers. The beginning of the trail took you through a forest which proved to be some interesting navigation. Sometime during the winter/spring months there was a wind event which ripped trees right out of the ground and left them lying all over the trail. So... naturally, Jeff and I crawled under, over and around these massive trees trying to find the trail. About a mile later the trail opens up to a gully of fields and fields of wildflowers, berry bushes, and streams! Although the hottest and steepest part of the trail, this section was beautiful and we had fun sloshing through streams and scurrying through berry bushes up to our chests! Once we got above tree line the trail traversed out onto a ledge where we had amazing views of Mount Baker and the Cascade range. At times we had to carefully hike across leftover snowfields from the previous winter. The trail then began to ascend again leading us into small boulder fields and more snowfields and finally winding its way up to the Lookout. Once on top we had our lunch, took some photos and then headed back down! Enjoy some photos of the Lookout....

Our travels then took a quick turn as we headed west towards the coast to Neah Bay! Our friends were out there surfing and camping and so we decided to join them. Neah Bay is the near the Western most point of the state of Washington and the lower 48 states. It is primarily a fishing and tourist town. Our camp was just footsteps from the ocean and as we arrived a thick fogged slogged in over the water... We set up camp and enjoyed dinner and stories by the fire. The fog left the trees dripping and everything got super saturated! It was very therapeutic to just stare into the fire, roast marshmallows, and warm our toes! The next day we went out surfing... the water was no more than 50 degrees and the air temperatures were in the 70's but we had a blast getting pummeled by the waves! Jeff and I surfed with John and Aneka and I will always remember the seal in the water swimming nearby and their dog Yogi sitting patiently at waters edge waiting for them to return! We headed out to the boardwalk where we stood at the Western most point of the lower 48 states. A whale had been spotted there earlier in the day and you could see sea lions basking on a rock in the sun....

Overall we are pretty exhausted and we had a great time :) Back to reality... *sigh*

Well gosh. When is the last time we posted on here?! I guess we have been pretty busy this summer. Jeff has been busy at the lab and I have been busy at work. This summer has been different for us. It didn't really stop raining until the last week in July. I don't think it broke 80 degrees until the beginning of August. But its beautiful now and we have been trying to make the best of it. We haven't taken any trips this summer... and have just been hunkered in and around the Seattle area. We have made quite a few changes in our lives...small ones but ones that have made an impact. We hope everyone out there is doing great and wanted to leave some photos and stories with you from our summer.

I have found a new love. My bike. I have always been a very competitive person. (Just ask my mom). And since competing as a NCAA athlete in college I haven't been able to find anything that can truly satisfy that competitive edge. Well I found it. I won my first race by running my bike across the finish line after breaking my chain 1/4 mile from the finish. Jeff didn't understand my tears as I had won my category but I wanted to slay that race sooooo bad! I had a personal time to beat and a technical error just wasn't acceptable. Next time... Jeff also had a rough go of it after altering his bike right before the race. Lesson learned... his chain fell off 6 times!! Never the less he and I both had a great time! Here are some fun pictures from the Capitol Forest Classic!

A BIG congrats to my Jefe for being the opening spread in the 2011-2012 Backcountry Magazine Buyers Guide! :) He is recovering SO SO SO well from his ACL surgery this spring and his knee is more stable and less painful than it has been in several years! He has been spending a lot of time with his rehab and it was definitely worth it. He is really looking forward to a great ski season this year! He also has become quite the bike mechanic... I definitely married a handy man. He also did all of our 100,000 mile maintenance on the Subaru including changing the timing belt...single handedly! He has his PhD qualifying exam this spring and has been hitting the books hard but I have confidence he will be just fine :)

Although we have not traveled this summer we have been able to enjoy the beauty of Washington. The picture above is from Snow Lake. We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful area.

As for me. I am doing pretty good. My job keeps me busy and can be stressful at times but I try to get out and stay busy. I road ride with the LUNAchix on wednesdays, mountain bike on my days off, hike with gals from work, and spend as much time with Jefe as he can stand.

If any of you out there are wondering we are happy here in Seattle and are trying to make the best of our time here!

Fourth of July

Well, Jeff and I had quite the busy day. We decided to go on a 35 mi road ride from Fall City, WA to Duvall, WA. Along our way in Carnation, WA we stopped at the Town's Fourth of July Parade and Celebration... we saw some cool vintage tractors, Spanish dancing Fresian horses, and enjoyed Strawberry shortcake. Then we completed our ride... grabbed some greek food in Fremont, WA and decided to bike from our place down to Gasworks Park on Lake Union to watch the fireworks.... 5 mi later we arrived only to remember we forgot any lights for the ride home... oops! The fireworks were great fun and I made my first attempts at photographing them. You can see more at my flickr site http://www.flickr.com/photos/kristinmcampbell/. After the fireworks we rode home along the Burke Gilman Trail in the dark.... quite spooky. Got home after 12:30pm... and then woke up for work at 6am this morning. We had a very fun day! Summer time!!!

So this summer I have been keeping myself pretty busy! In addition to working 45hrs a week I have been hiking, biking, climbing, and hanging out with my Jefe. I am currently biking with a non-competitive cycling team wednesday nights called the LUNAchix. Their mission is to get women on their bikes and active. It has been such a blast with solid 20mi evening rides! Thursdays are usually my Mtn biking days where I have recently learned how to hit jumps, gap rollers, and ride the free ride trails (good bye Cross Country helloooo freeride!). Every other thursday night I compete in a local Mtn Bike cross country race. Its only about 4mi but each time it kicks my butt!! Weekends I hang out with Jefe where he is my belay slave, or we go on a walk about. His PT is going SOOO well. He can make full rotations and a stationary bike with his knee. Pretty soon he will be on a bike and we plan on doing a lot of cycling! Weekends I also hike with the girls. We have done 3 hikes and 1 camping trip so far! Well, everyone out there, I hope you are having a good summer too! Enjoy the photos and a little movie clip.

This strapping young lad turned 29 today... the 2nd of May. He currently sports a groovy pair of crutches, a hardcore brace, and an adorable pair of hospital booties.

It may not have been the best birthday ever but it sure will be one he remembers....err... doesn't remember (depending on the pain meds) :)

If everyone is wondering his ACL surgery went well and he has some hard months of Physical Therapy ahead of him. He is pretty much the strongest person I know so don't worry, he will be back in action stronger than ever.

I send him all my wifey wuvin his way! Happy Birthday, Jefe. Te quiero mucho!

Whats with the Mood??

So a lot of me has wondered what my "style" is as a photographer. Some people have asked why my photos are so moody or dark. Well, I guess its because I live in the Northwest where the sun is pretty much nonexistant and rain is frequent. Its not that I don't have a sunny outlook on life. Its that everything I see is dark and wet. I always see clouds of varying types and often classify my day by the degree of wetness outside. Its just how I have adjusted to taking photos. Like it or leave it... these are my photos.

A rainy day at the Skagit County Tulip Fields.

This is by far my favorite photo from the day. This particular tulip had been crushed and was overlooked by many. The drops of rain immediately caught my eye. People probably thought I was crazy snapping away at the one almost dead flower in an entire garden of spring tulips.

To me this flower exudes friendliness. Literally hundreds of white pedals eerily staring at you.

Another awkward moment for me as I lied on the wet ground shooting toward the sky. The result was a very interesting photo.

I liked how this tulip had not bloomed yet and was almost protected by its leaf.

I don't know what it is but I LOVE white flowers of any variety.

Amazing that this is a tulip huh?

Again with the white flowers. The challenge in this photo was not overexposing the white values while not underexposing the green values.

This field of Daffodils was breath taking. I really liked the lighter flower in the center of all of the brilliant yellow flowers (click to enlarge).

Foster a Cat. Save a Life.

This is our foster cat, Marie. It is my understanding that she has been with the Seattle Humane Society for over a year and is still looking for a home of her own. She is very sweet, curious, and playful. Her favorite pass times are playing with shoe laces, catnip, and watching birds out the window. Her crinkle ear is a result of an untreated ear infection. She is all better now but her ear will remain crinkled. I think it gives her character. If anyone is interested in adopting her please let me know!

I was so excited to get to go home to see my family! It has been so hard being in Seattle while my family is in Loveland, Colorado. I used to just drive from Salt Lake City to Loveland to see everyone but driving is not an option anymore...so a plane ticket later I got to go to Loveland.

My family is doing really well! My mom is working hard at Edward Jones and caring for her family (as she does best). She loves being a Grandma to Landon and Logan and her and Grandpa are their number one sports fans! Logan is swimming (he has LOTS of ribbons!) and Landon is just starting Soccer. My dad is doing well and has turned into quite the little traveler. His work with Exponential Engineering is always busy and every time we talk he gets to go to some cool state. He also gets to visit his sister in Kentucky. Ahh Kentucky... basketball that is! While at home I got to watch a few of the March Madness games. My dad is a HUGE Kentucky basketball fan and we got to watch them make it into the Final Four!! Woot!

Bryan is busy at school with an emphasis on Film and on his off time works hard at Barnes and Noble. Coury just got a new job at a Landscaping/Nursery in Ft Collins. She has her own place now and has many adventures in Rock Climbing, Soccer, and hiking!

My sister Jennifer works for the School District and loves having the same schedule as her boys Landon and Logan! Jeff V. is always hard working with a little bit o' fishing on the side!

I had so much fun weeding my mom's garden, cooking, watching basketball and spending time with my family. I hope they come to visit little ole me soon!

Today I ventured out to Cougar Mountain Zoo in Issaquah, Washington. This zoo's focus is educating the public about endangered species such as these Bengal Tigers. Bengal tigers naturally come in 4 different colors. The original orange (most commonly familiar), Blond (as seen in the tiger below), Royal White (a white tiger with black stripes) and White (an all white tiger with very faint gray stripes). There are only 50 blond Bengal tigers in the world and all of them are in captivity. Each "exotic" color is a recessive gene. All of these colors would be found in the wild however, poachers have killed off any exotic looking tiger thus causing the only color we are familiar with today as the traditional orange. There are only 1400 remaining Bengal Tigers today. They are critically endangered. In the last 100 years we have significantly killed off their population through habitat loss and poaching. Although it may be sad to see animals in zoos I feel they are ambassadors to their breed, educating future generations about the importance of conservation. Each of the tigers below was born into captivity. There currently are no programs which raise captive tigers and then release them into the wild.

So... as many of you know Jeff has been traveling A LOT lately. He has had some really cool ski trips in the recent weeks and I hope he posts about them when he gets home.

As for me, I have been holding up the fort at home. Working mostly. The northwest continues to confuse me as it snowed yesterday where we live. Also, the ski resort has received almost 40 inches of snow in the last 48 hours. This is only amazing because in January I was skiing in full on rain and the ski resorts closes this weekend.

I have been trying to pick up the camera again but I find myself unmotivated with all of the gloomy weather outside... Here is a self portrait I did today. I don't enjoy taking photos of myself but there are only so many things to take photos of in this house :)

I don't think I can take another day of rain. While I appreciate what rain does for our planet, I ask politely to give it a break. I saw the sun once last August and I would like to see it again. I am not sure how many days I can last staring out the window wishing I could go outside and play. Please, I beg of you. Not another dreary, moody, sad, or depressing day. No more shades of gray or endless darkness. I want to wake up with the sun and fall asleep with the sunset.

A different type of Rainforest

Olympic National Park does consider its forests "rainforest" and rightfully so. We were told it rains 300 days out of the year! The effects of this are beautiful large and mossy trees, ferns and mushrooms. Here are a few photos from the forests...

Adventures on the Olympic Coast

Jefe and I headed out west where the Mountains meet the sea, Olympic National Park. A ferry ride across the Puget Sound, several hours of driving through old logging towns and even Forks, WA (the "Twilight" movie hot spot) brought us eventually to La Push, WA. With a wilderness permit in hand we hiked out to the beach and found a perfect campsite nestled in the safety of the trees. The skies were nothing short of dramatic and always had something to say with frequent rain events. High tides forced us to walk nimbly a

mong very large trees that had been pushed ashore while low tides offered expeditions into the rocky tide pools where we found anenome, star fish, and other coastal life. Overhead 2 bald eagles soared from haystack to haystack screaming loudly. That night was hard to sleep. Between the roar of the waves crashing into the trees and rocks, and the rain echoing on the tent walls the sounds were deafening. I lay awake wondering if the tide would in fact reach our tent... had we camped high enough? The next morning offered more low tide exploration where seals and seagulls were feasting on the muscles and clams now exposed. The two eagles we had seen before were perched high above in an old tree silhouetted against the sunrise.

La Push is known as a surf hot spot for many in the Washington area

. The waves are large and offer clean rips. Next time we plan on venturing onto the water.

Highly recommended and one of the best campsites to date. Get there someday!

We spent some time apart lately. Kristin is such a wonderful wife, she let me take off for 7 days of skiing at the Sorcerer Lodge in British Columbia. There was some blue skies, very cold temps (-15 deg F) and the deepest snow I've ever skied,a heli ride in and out, a few folks with frostbite and one blown ACL.

More pics and vids are in the process, but for now we'll let a teaser of the headcam from our deepest day, and a slide show put together by Garrett Grove hold you over for now.

8am and 8 degrees up Stevens Pass. BRR!! Jeff and I only lasted about 2hrs before the cold brought us into the lodge to dethaw our poor feet. Horrible Screamie Barfies!!! (for those of you not familiar with screamie barfies it is when your feet thaw they hurt so bad that first you want to scream and then you want to barf). ANYWAY. The Northwest is a strange place. It is never cold AND snowing. Its either warm and snowing or freezing and sunny. Buuut we are just thankful we can ski. The past two weekends we have been skiing hard. Jeff has the amazing opportunity to get helicoptered in to a ski hut in the middle of Canada to ski for seven days. A little congratulations for all his hard work earning his Masters and being accepted into the UW PhD Program!! But that means earn those turns and getinto shape fast! I have been honing in my mogul/mixed condition skiing ability. Working on my ski technique and fluidity. I must admit I have a good coach. Anywho. Stevens Pass

I heart Stevens Pass! It seems like I am the only one skiing this year! With Jefe's finals and testing in the UW Orthopedic lab, he has been bogged down in the city. Not me :) my job allows me to work 4 10hour shifts and ski multiple days a week. So far my ski days are at 9! I am proud haha for working 40-45hrs a week thats not bad! I usually drive up the pass alone and am desperately seeking a good audio book to keep me company. I love the drive though. Driving through the smaller towns such as Sultan, Goldbar, and through Index. Along the road there are several tiny coffee shacks. I plan on counting them some day. My favorite spot is two school buses that a retired couple turned into a BBQ. They have the BEST brisket around! All in all I have had fun on my solo trips up the mountains. Jefe finally has winter break so he will hopefully be able to ski with me!

It is officially a blizzard in Seattle. In the past 24 hours it has snowed at least 3-4 inches. Tonight Jeff took me out to my favorite restaurant, Sonrisa. Afterwards, he started our first fire this winter. It is so awesome to have a fireplace! The cats aren't quite sure what to think of it yet. Enjoy a few photos of "home."

First of all let me just say..... ITS SNOWING DOWNTOWN SEATTLE!! WOOP!

Then allow me to emphasize... WE FINALLY GOT TO PLAY. We put aside work, school, and responsibility for a morning in the snow. Jeff and I headed upStevens Pass bright and early this morning to recon Skyline Ridge. Fatty flakes were coming down the whole morning with light fluffy snow under-toe. Its still early season and the area had too many rocks to ski anywhere but down the skin tracks but the touring was fun and we got to scope out some good areas.

A Winter Wonderland. I loved the trees this morning. It felt like a Dr. Suess book.

1,000+ vert today.

We um... forgot a scraper. At least we remembered our ski gear :)

All Smiles... Now back to work!

SNOW!! Jeff and I went up the canyon yesterday to get our ski passes :) This season we will be skiing inbounds at Stevens Pass and exploring Baker's back country. This year is supposed to be it.... La Nina'. Epic storms, deep powder days... ahhh time can only pass so quickly... mark your calendars because November 19th it begins... bwahaha

So here's the skinny.

On Oct 5th Jeff and I had our 3rd year anniversary. We were able to make it out to dinner at our favorite Seattle restaurant Son Risa's.

Jeff has been surviving on 3 hours of sleep a night and a cocktail of frozen burritos and red bul for the past 7 daysl. Between our move, his last quarter of classes, grading for a professor, volunteering for a bilingual school, being a research assistant for a UW lab AND applying for the NSF fellowship he is barely alive. Seriously, I think I had to check his pulse this morning.

I am loving my new job and have also been busy with the move, work, and volunteering.

We can't remember the last time we went out and did something fun. Climbing has been non-existant this fall, sad. But we hope to survive the month and start having some fun for a change. Life is hard work!

Today we went to Keenland Race Track in Lexington, Kentucky to see the Yearling Auction. Prize Thoroughbred Yearlings are auctioned off to biders that hope to have the next great racing horse. Horses sell anywhere from $1000 to the top selling at 500,00!! Please see video in last post for the auctioneer's speedy talk.

A few changes are coming our way.
KRISTIN
Kristin has recently made the difficult decision to leave the Seattle Humane Society. Her last day there is Wednesday. However, she does hope to continue to volunteer as a photographer taking photos for the Media Pets highlighted with News organizations such as KOMO or KING5. Along with that.... Kristin has been hired with Cat's Exclusive Veterinary Center in Shoreline, WA as a Veterinary Assistant. This clinic is a cat only clinic that specializes in Hyperthyroid treatment of cats and provides top of the line veterinary care. It is a large clinic with 7 veterinarians. She couldn't be more excited for this wonderful opportunity!!

JEFFREY
Jeff has been volunteering over 50 hours a week in Dr. Randy Ching's Applied Biomechanics Lab and has recently been hired as his lab assistant. Jeff and Randy will soon start writing proposals for funding for Jeff's PhD project. Jeff also is a grader/ta for Dr. Thomas Horbett's Biomaterials course this fall semester. On top of all of this Jeff is taking his final 3 class of his masters and will be done in December!!!

...and then we will ski.

ACTUALLY. We are also looking for a new apartment/townhome/duplex above ground and may be moving soon. We are looking in the same area so Jeff (and hopefully kristin too) can still bike commute.

We love Seattle but dislike the rain :( which it has been doing... all week... and will continue to do... all week.

Recently, some wasps have decided to build a nest in our ONLY window. Yes, thats right. We only have one quality window in our tiny basement apartment and that is where they decided to nest. So we have spent time spraying, plugging the entrance, and setting wasp traps.

Well if you can believe... these little buggers found a way INTO our apartment. Through some handy detective work jeff and I found that they were coming in through the thermostat which leads to the inside of our wall. EEK!! Each day we have found about 15-20 nearly dying or very far from dying hornets in our bedroom.

The problem still has yet to be solved. Any ideas???

We have been working hard the last year. Jeff nearly finished his masters while Kristin worked over 40 hours a week. We needed a vacation. So, if you don't already know, we LOVE Canada. Where on earth have Jeff and Kristin been? Why haven't they been posting?! Ha.

Jeff is still living on Friday Harbor in San Juan Island. He returns in about a week or so and I couldn't be more thrilled to have him home again! He is currently completing his research paper for his biomechanics course. (You will have to ask him the specifics I don't think I will do it justice.) After that he finally gets somewhat of a summer; in between working for Amedica and volunteering at a UW professors lab. Such a studious guy.

I, Kristin, have been paying the bills. Yup, I stayed home to work while Jeff got to live on a beautiful island (he owes me). However, I cannot be too bitter as I went up to visit him almost every weekend! And yes, I was busy with photography and trying to capture the beauty of the San Juans! Please check out my blog! So what is Kristin doing with all of this photography? You ask. Well.... I am trying to figure that out. haha. And I will let you know when I do.
Work at the shelter has been SOOO busy. It seems all the momma cats got together and decided to have babies at the same time. So naturally, our shelter is flooded with kittens. If you would like a cute fuzzy wittle kitty than come on down! Like this one... all together now... AWWWWHH!!! Thats Lucas. I want him too so don't feel guilty about sharing the same feelings.

Anyway, when I get a minute i will post all of our adventurous photos from this summer!

A day in the life of Jefe

Jeffrey is currently doing research at the University of Washington Labs on San Juan Island. The class is a bio mechanics course in which he is studying properties of marine/aquatic life. The UW labs are unique in that they can create marine environments in a lab setting and keep specimens alive. Each week Jeffrey collects specimens in the field and brings them into the lab for testing. He is currently working with Gooseneck Barnacles (see photo below).
